BM TRADA demonstrates the benefits of passive fire protection at Firex International
BM TRADA offered a number of educational seminars and practical demonstrations at Firex International 2014 to bring to life the benefits of effective passive fire protection (PFP).
A charred fire door sample formed the heart of the BM TRADA stand, showing in dramatic fashion the effectiveness of correctly specified and installed fire doors. One side of the door was burnt, while the other side was unaffected. Correctly and incorrectly fitted doors were also shown side by side, on the stand and visitors were encouraged to open the doors to identify the errors. Examples of firestopping situations were also on show supported by a series of fire test videos. These graphically demonstrated the marked difference in the fire resistance capabilities between properly installed fire doors, firestopping and fire resistant glazing, compared to where these same PFP measures have been installed incorrectly. Technical information sheets offered advice on a range of issues from Reaction to Fire – Testing and Classification; to Fire Doors for the Health Sector.
During the event, BM TRADA also delivered its popular free half-day seminar, Fire Protection Measures – Understanding Your Responsibilities, for which some 90 delegates had registered. The seminar explained the duties of the Responsible Person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) and raises awareness of passive fire protection.
Delivered by experts in their specific fields, the seminar programme offers a comprehensive introduction to the legislation, as well as guidance on what to look for when undertaking a fire risk assessment. It also explains the importance of ensuring the competence of fire risk assessors and describes the role of third party certification in helping to confirm the quality, reliability and safety of products and personnel.
Further free events are scheduled to take place on 7 October, at the NEC, Birmingham during Timber Expo; and on 5 November at the Thistle Portland Hotel in Manchester. For further information or to book a place at one of these events or on BM TRADA’s popular Fire Doors Explained CPD seminar please visit the BM TRADA website .
Two further seminar sessions led by BM TRADA Senior Consultant, Fire Peter Barker provided an analysis of what actions should be taken following a fire risk assessment. These highlighted the role of third party certification of products and installers in providing confidence that the product is fit for purpose and correctly installed.
In addition, BM TRADA launched its new Q-Mark Scheme for Fire Stopping Installation at the event. The scheme aims to ensure that that fire stopping solutions are being fitted correctly and to verify the competence of installation companies, while offering building owners and Responsible Persons with a certificate of installation.
Both the stand and the events proved highly popular, attracting a large number of visitors from a wide variety of industry sectors including facilities managers, fire service personnel, contractors and health and safety managers.
