Tyco is also supplying ANSUL┬« high-pressure CO[Carbon Dioxide] systems for the critical asset protection project and both the FM-200 and the CO2 installations are being controlled by the latest Pyro-Chem detection and activation equipment. In total, Tyco is supplying 28 tonnes of HYGOOD FM-200 for the 150 occupied control rooms in the five new operating centres and ten tonnes of ANSUL CO2 for unoccupied areas such as plant and switchboard enclosures. Both systems are UL [Underwriters Laboratories] and FM [Factory Mutual] approved.

The FM-200 clean agent fire extinguishant was described by Palmet as the natural choice” to safeguard the occupied areas of the new SMART buildings. It has a proven track record for protecting some of the world’s most critical and irreplaceable assets, and is in use in over 100,000 applications, in more than 70 countries. With both FM-200 and the careful design of the CO2 system there is no risk of thermal shock damage to delicate equipment. Both are electrically non-conductive and non-corrosive, and leave no oily residue or deposits to damage software, data files or communications equipment so clean-up operations following agent discharge is unnecessary.

The Turkish civil aviation sector is growing at around 30 percent a year – six times the world growth rate – and its – multi-million SMART, or Systematic Modernization of Air Traffic Management Resources in Turkey, programme will provide the country with a world-class air traffic management system. This necessitates the construction of new buildings in Ankara and Istanbul, which will house on-route control room centres, and approach control centres in Antalya, Dalaman and Ercan in northern Cyprus. These new 63,700 square-metre facilities will also include data rooms, critical plant rooms and information recovery centres.

When completed in 2010, SMART will provide Turkey with one of the most advanced air traffic control management systems in the world. It will also act as a regional hub, linking Turkey’s nine neighbouring countries to the Eurocontrol Centre in Brussels, which has been created to harmonise and integrate air navigation services throughout Europe, aiming at the creation of a uniform air traffic management system for both civil and military users.

The SMART order is the culmination of a 12-year close working relationship between Tyco and Palmet, and is one of Turkey’s most important infrastructure developments. Palmet is responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of all of the fire protection systems, which comply with current NFPA [National Fire Protection Association] Codes of Practice.

Alan Elder, EMEA Sales Director for commercial suppression businesses for Tyco Fire Suppression & Building Products comments: “The SMART project in Turkey is a major international endorsement of our ability to provide comprehensive high-performance total flooding fire suppression systems for critical asset protection. The close relationship between Tyco and Palmet also demonstrates to building owners and occupiers the benefit of the close trading partnerships that Tyco strives to maintain globally”.
