ASFP releases new fire door video for FDSW

Wrightstyle and Christmas fire safety in emerging markets

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has released a new online video module on fire doors to mark Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW).

The free to view video explains the vital role played by fire doors in holding back flames and smoke during a fire and describes the typical features that should be considered when checking that a door is correctly installed and maintained.

The video explains how a fire door can be identified and the checks that a building occupier or risk assessor should undertake. It describes the role of each of the component parts of a fire doorset, including intumescent and smoke seals; ironmongery; and door-closers.

Highlighting the importance of correct installation and regular maintenance, the video explains how the use of third party certificated products and installers can ensure that a fire door will perform as expected in the event of a fire.

The Fire Door module is the third in the ASFP Video Library. Modules one and two offer an introduction to passive fire protection and take viewers through a typical risk assessment in a real building. Further modules to be launched in coming weeks will describe the key features that a fire risk assessor should examine for a range of different categories of passive fire protection, including: fire-resistant floors, walls and ceilings; firestopping; ducts and dampers; cavity barriers and cladding; and structural fire protection. To access the ASFP Video Library visit www.asfp.org.uk/videos/.

The range of eight video modules will complement the ASFP’s range of risk assessment tools. This includes the ASFP Guide to Inspecting Passive Fire Protection for Fire Risk Assessor, which is available for free download from www.asfp.org.uk, or can be purchased in hard copy for £20. The ASFP’s Android-based fire risk assessment app, firesafetyfile is available as a free BETA version. To request access, please email: firesafetyfile@asfp.org.uk

Fire Door Safety Week, organised by the British Woodworking Federation and supported by the ASFP, takes place between 16-21 September. It aims to draw attention to the crucial role played by fire doors and to point out the dangers when fire doors are incorrectly specified, installed or maintained.

The week will be marked by a series of events and promotions supported by trade associations and their members as well as local Fire and Rescue Services, local authorities, landlords and other sleeping accommodation providers.
