BS 9991 & BS 9999: stay current with the changes to key fire safety standards

Fire safety standards exist to reduce risks

Fire safety standards are very important. Not only do they help save lives, they also mitigate fire’s other impacts, including those on business continuity, heritage and the environment.

The recommendations and guidance given in BS 9991 and BS 9999 are intended to safeguard the lives of building occupants and fire-fighters.These are key fire safety standards, while BS 9999 focuses on non-residential buildings, BS 9991 covers residential buildings.

Both standards provide recommendations on how organizations can meet the requirements of fire safety legislation through design, taking flexible and practical approaches. They also give recommendations and guidance on the design, management and use of buildings to achieve reasonable standards of fire safety for all people in and around buildings.

Currently both standards are being comprehensively revised to reflect the changes to building and construction of the last few years.
