Discovering The Industry's Next Generation

Global fire safety and security systems provider Tyco recently held a special Discovery Day for local GCSE pupils at its head office in Manchester. The event was designed to provide pupils with an overview of the fire-side of the Tyco business; looking at various job functions and product demonstrations to encourage young people’s career development within the fire and security industry.

The Tyco Discovery Day aims to assist schools with employability programmes. The pupils who attended the event came from the local Our Lady’s High School in Manchester. As part of their Science module, the 11 GSCE pupils visited the Tyco head office on the 19th March 2014.

After short presentations about the fire industry and Tyco’s business, the pupils were given a tour of the facility whereby they were shown how to use a range of fire detection, alarm and suppression systems.

“Our Discovery Day for local pupils is a great way for them to gain a useful insight into a potential career opportunity,” explained Joanna McCaffery, Head of Communications from Tyco. “The design, installation and servicing of fire solutions creates a wide range of incredibly rewarding job functions and we will continue to actively encourage young people into our industry.”

Tyco has supported apprentices for an astounding 140 years; hiring apprentices straight from school who are then working towards a BTEC qualification in engineering.
